end

As another year winds down, it’s great to reminisce about the past. Amherst schools are part of your past.

The Amherst Central Alumni Foundation (ACAF) works hard to ensure the students of today have the same opportunities as alumni did in the past. We fund thousands of dollars of grants each year to help make that happen. Because of the generous support we receive from alumni annually, the ACAF can achieve of our goals.

Please consider making an end of year donation!

Donations can be made in different ways:

  • You can make a standard donation either via mail or credit/debit card.
    • Follow this link to find out how—> http://www.amherstalumni.org/Donate.htm
  • You can also “Dedicate a Seat” in the high school auditorium.
    • Follow this link to find out how—> http://www.amherstalumni.org/Dedicate-a-Seat.htm

The ACAF is also supporting the 2016 Operetta “Grease” on Friday, February 5th by having our 25th Alumni Night at the Operetta. A block of seats are reserved for the show to create an alumni section. For more information about purchasing tickets, follow this link—> http://www.amherstalumni.org/Alumni-Night-at-the-Operetta.htm

Have a Happy New Year!

This email was sent out to the district yesterday by Anthony Panella, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, on the passing of Amherst Middle School teacher Larry Grisafi.

The Amherst Central Alumni Foundation sends its heartfelt condolences to the Grisafi family and all affected by his death.

Dear Colleagues,

It is with great sadness that I write you knowing that one of our current teachers, Larry Grisafi, passed away on Sunday. Larry was a valued teacher at Amherst Middle School since 1997; originally teaching sixth grade before moving to seventh grade in 2000 (social studies). Larry was a passionate, student centered teacher and proud family man. He loved his wife and children dearly. He spoke with great pride about his family; conveying the same messages of honesty, respect, compassion, responsibility and hard work from his dinner table to his students and colleagues.

Larry, like many of us, considered Amherst to be his second family. He arrived early and stayed late to make sure his performance met the standard he set for himself. Like any family that experiences a loss we will have our questions, doubts and moments of uncertainty. But, through it all we will have each other; and for that I am grateful.

Larry’s family will be present to receive friends on Friday, December 18, 2015 from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM for a memorial gathering at the Castiglia Funeral Home located at 873 Abbott Road, Buffalo, NY, 14220. A memorial mass will be held at St. John the Baptist Church, 1085 Englewood Ave., Tonawanda, NY, on Saturday, December 19, 2015 at 10:45 AM.

Contributions may be made in memory of Larry Grisafi to Hospice Buffalo, Inc.

Sincerely,

Tony

The Amherst Central Alumni Foundation Grant Committee awarded $4,807 for requests submitted by faculty and staff. Grants were awarded in all four schools for tablets, literacy materials, science outreach and snack programs. Money was also awarded to help fund field trips, a boys’ basketball trip and a French Foreign Exchange field trip to the Albright Knox Art Gallery. The grants are fully funded by generous alumni donations, an annual Golf Outing as well as all-class reunions. No monies are received from the school district. Grants are awarded for programs that are not funded by the school budget and are selected based on the most students that will be positively affected. The Grant Committee expects to award approximately $10,000 in grants for the 2015-2016 school year and has awarded over $68,000 in the last 12 years. The next deadline for requests is March 1, 2016.

Additional grants were awarded through the Appeal Fund. Items over $1,000 which directly affect the entire school district are chosen. This year, the Appeal Fund awarded $7,125 for a new football blocking sled, hockey equipment, and a new Smallwood Elementary community time program. Windermere Elementary School’s Musical Theater Club will be up and running again after a very generous donation from an Amherst Alumnus. The high school’s Orchestra field trip was also partially funded from the Dedicated Seats Fund. Alumni and parents can purchase a plaque to be placed on one of the seats in the high school auditorium. The Dedicated Seats Fund was established to specifically help fund the arts in the school district. The Appeal Fund is supported through generous donations from local Amherst businesses, alumni and parents. The Alternative Funding Committee consists of administration, faculty, staff, parents, community members and Alumni Foundation directors who select the recipients.

The Amherst School District, its Board of Education and the Amherst Alumni Foundation, Inc. invite your participation and partnership benefiting Amherst’s students, teachers, academic programs, arts, athletics and our school’s buildings and learning spaces. For more information on how you can donate please visit www.amherstalumni.org or www.amherstappeal.org.
