To Eggert Road School With Love

Posted by amherstalumnioffice on 2016-03-02
Posted in: News. Tagged: Amherst Central Schools, Eggert Road School, Ruth Westenfelder. 5 Comments

Ruth Westenfelder was a teacher at the Amherst Central School District’s Eggert Road School for 38 years. In her final year of teaching at the school before retiring, she put together a scrapbook of the history of Eggert Road School that she presented to then principal David 1-image36Maul. The book contains a lot of interesting material from 1937-1975 about the school and her career as a teacher. After Ruth passed away in 2014 at 98, some additional info was added about her death.

Another former teacher, Janet Chillei, contacted the alumni office asking if we would like to make a copy of the scrapbook before it was given to the Amherst Museum. Our office decided to scan the book and share it online to give former Eggert Road School students and Amherst alumni a chance to view. Eggert Road School closed in 1982.

The title of the scrapbook is “To Eggert Road School With Love” and you can view it by clicking here—>

July 7, 1914 – Feb. 3, 2016

John Krestic, a music teacher and school band leader, died Wednesday under Hospice care in Mercy Hospital in Buffalo, a few days after suffering a stroke. He was 101.

Born in Harvey, Ill., Mr. Krestic grew up attending schools in Lancaster. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Fredonia Normal School and taught instrumental music at Silver Creek Central Schools from 1937 to 1944.

During those years, he played professionally in the Carborundum Band, which was broadcast over the Columbia Radio Network from Niagara Falls. He also worked as director of music at Churchill Tabernacle during the time when it was broadcast eight hours every Sunday on WKBW radio.

In 1944, he took a teaching position at Amherst Central High School and eventually became chair of the music department. In 1950, he took a sabbatical to earn a master’s degree at the University of Michigan. He worked at the high school until his retirement in 1969.

The Amherst Central Alumni Chorale, a vision of ‘58 alumnus Robert Laskie, is in its third year of producing wonderful music. It is almost 50 members strong. Our inaugural conductor and accompanist, Rosemary Dayton and Carolyn Russell, will continue on a part time basis. But the funds will be to compensate all directors and accompanists and ensure the future of the Chorale.

Bob sang with us until he was no longer able to, sadly succumbing to Pancreatic cancer. We miss Bob will all our hearts and it is our desire to begin a fund in his name to enable the chorale to continue bringing generations of alumni together sharing music, memories and friendships. We are forever indebted to Bob, Posy and Carolyn for spring boarding this wonderful group!

Please feel free to donate in memory or honor of Bob or another musical alumnus!

You can donate two ways — either via downloadable donation form below or PayPal button for credit/debit card donation.

Thank you for your support!
