(By Ellen Marshall ’69, ACAF Board)

Robert W. Laskie loved both of his alma maters, Amherst Central High School and Buffalo State College. Lucky for Bob, as a loyal alum, he never had to change his school mascot or colors. Bob always rooted for the tiger team in orange & black.

It is impossible to acknowledge adequately the devotion of energy, time and spirit that Bob Laskie gave to ACAF, Inc. In 1975, Bob was named a charter member of the Board of Directors of the Amherst Loyalty Fund which would in 1987 become the Amherst Central Alumni Foundation, Inc. A main reason for the significant financial growth over that period stemmed from a very successful 50th Reunion of Amherst High School. Bob was the Co-Chair of the “Golden” Anniversary which saw more than 1400 Amherst alums return for an “All Class” Reunion.

Throughout his more than fifty years of volunteer service to Amherst, Bob held a variety of leadership roles, served on virtually every committee and participated in all fundraising projects. He was a Past President of ACAF, Inc. and a key member of the steering committee for the new HS Track. Bob co-chaired each Educator Emeritus event and served for all 13 years on the alumni golf committee. He was a Class Director for 1958 and worked on their class reunions. When the Amherst Alumni Chorale became a reality in 2013, no one was more thrilled than Bob to return to his musical roots in Room #602 at the High School.

It will be hard to imagine the Amherst Alumni Foundation without Bob Laskie’s enthusiastic involvement. This year’s 14th Annual Golf Classic on July 23rd will be dedicated to the memory of Robert W. Laskie ’58.

2015-dedicate-rev

If you attended “Guys & Dolls” at the high school auditorium, maybe you got to see the first row of seats that have been dedicated by alumni, parents, faculty, etc. The next wave of seat dedications will be mounted in June this year.

This is an opportunity for you to remember someone special, put your own name on, put your family’s name on or dedicate a seat to anyone you like. It is also a great way to support the arts in Amherst Schools. All proceeds go to our grant program to help fill funding voids.

For more information about dedicating a seat, click here—>

1-63p1.previewBy ANNA WALTERS Reporter, Amherst Bee – In 1813, Sarah Lovejoy chose to defend her home, sending her son into the woods, as the burning of Buffalo filled the city with smoke.

Although Lovejoy’s home was ransacked and burned to the ground, Lovejoy Street now stands on the east side of Buffalo in her memory.

“We have such a strong history that I think a lot of people don’t know. You can drive down these streets every day and not think about it,” said Angela Keppel, author of the blog “Discovering Buffalo, One Street at a Time.”

According to the blog, Lovejoy was the only woman killed in the defense of Buffalo when it was burned by the British during the War of 1812.
