Thank you, Tiger Alumni.

Our collaboration with the high school’s Math Department on a calculator drive for students was a success.

Tiger Alumni donated almost $1500 and a number of calculators. This will bolster the Math Department’s lending program for TI-84 Graphing Calculators. The program helps students in need by providing them with a valuable tool needed for math courses in the high school.

After a number inquiries from alumni about sending cash for calculators, we’ve opened up the drive to financial donations.

There’s also been some confusion about the TI-84 name. They are actually called TI-84 Plus.

Here is original appeal from our first post on calculator drive:

The Amherst Mathematics Department is trying to find gently used or new TI-84 calculators that can be reused for our students as part of a calculator loan program.

Technology is a growing resource in education and currently in mathematics graphing calculators are a requirement for all state math exams.  In an effort to prepare our students for this demand, we suggest that all students try to purchase their own TI-84 calculator.  However, for some families this technology purchase is not within the family’s economic means.  Due to this, the Amherst Math Department started a Calculator Loan Program over 15 years ago.  This program allows students and families that are economically challenged an opportunity to borrow a graphing calculator for the entire school year.  The program started with loaning out around 50 calculators and we now have over 100 calculators in circulation with a waiting list of more students that are in need.

Over the years the math department has applied for grants and tried to continue to increase the inventory of calculators.  However, due to calculators breaking down and the increased demand, we are in need of even more.  We are hoping that our Alumni will be able to help us add to our program by donating a TI-84 Calculators back to the school.  One calculator can help make a difference for one student every year in the future!

There will be a calculator donation box in the main office and alumni office at the High School.  You can also mail your calculators to the school.  All help will be graciously appreciated.

Thank you,

Jenny Koeppel-Keenan and the Entire Mathematics Department

Peter Dahl of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, died unexpectedly on December 7, 2019. He was born July 19, 1973 in Wilmington, Delaware. He grew up in Buffalo, New York, and graduated from Amherst High School. He received his undergraduate degree from SUNY Buffalo and graduated from the University of Vermont Medical School. He completed his residency at Northwell Health in New York and his Endocrinology Fellowship at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell in New York. He practiced medicine at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia and Mainline Health at Riddle Hospital in Media, Pennsylvania. Peter was generosity and kindness embodied and leaves a legacy of love with his passing. Every person who was lucky enough to know him experienced his depth of kindness, compassion, and caring. Peter’s dedication to his patients was a testament to his value of service to others. He loved music and played the violin, but his greatest joy was spending time with his family. An amazing father, Peter lived each day with unparalleled engagement, and never missed a day at the playground, rain or shine. One of his favorite places was Cape Cod, where he spent summers with his parents and grandparents, and where he married the love of his life, Katie. He and Katie brought their children to Cape Cod to enjoy the beauty and peace of the space that meant so much to them. They recently brought the children back to the Chatham Bars Inn, where they were married, to enjoy French fries and lemonade after a day of lobster fishing. Peter is survived by his wife, Katie Lackritz, and children, Jeremy Lackritz Dahl and Magnolia Lackritz Dahl. He is also survived by his mother, Jacqueline Burrows, his sisters, Jacqueline Sailer and Priscilla Dahl, and his brother, Joseph Sailer, with four nieces and six nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Roy Dennis Dahl. Memorial Information: Saturday, December 14, 2019 at 4:30pm Unitarian Universalist Church of Delaware County 145 West Rose Tree Road, Media, PA 19063

In lieu of flowers or food, please consider supporting Katie and the  hildren, https://www.gofundme.com/f/in-memory-of-peter-dahl as they navigate their new reality or donating to the Land Trust of Cape Cod, http://www.thecompact.net/ in Peter’s memory.

Thank you, Joe Sailer – Class of 1987

The Amherst Central Alumni Foundation has partnered up with the high school mathematics department with a donation drive to acquire TI-84 calculators for students. It’s a great way for Tiger Alumni to give to the Tigers of today. 🐯

Here is information on the drive from the department.
