Director of the Daily Bread Food Truck and Mission is Steve Biegner, Class of 1989 – Sue Currie, Class of 1984 and Emilie Piette, Class of 2016 are also involved

Western New York’s only non-profit food truck is ready to serve the public as so many in our community are affected by this unprecedented pandemic. Normally, the truck is readying for regular service beginning in the spring – but this season is different.

Over the past four months, Daily Bread has delivered over 1,500 meals on weekends to needy families in conjunction with the Amherst School District. These meal deliveries will now be extended through April and possibly May, as needed. Each delivery consists of enough food for a family of four to have at least two full meals, consisting of healthy, homemade dishes prepared by our chef – all at no cost, thanks to our generous donors and grants.

In addition to these regular deliveries, Daily Bread will be serving free hot meals from the truck on Thursdays and Sundays from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Those in need may stop by and grab a meal to go. If you are unable to leave your house, and especially for seniors in need, we are offering free delivery within one mile of the sites. Just call (716) 835-0407 for details.

Locations and dates are:

  • Thursdays, March 26-April 16, in front of St. Paul’s Church, 4007 Main St., Eggertsville, NY 14226
  • Sundays, March 29-April 19, at Windermere Elementary School, 291 Windermere Blvd., Amherst, NY 14226

Stay tuned to our Facebook page for up to date information as things are rapidly changing and we add more opportunities to help the community.

About Daily Bread:

Daily Bread Food Truck is Buffalo’s first and only non-profit food share truck. Our philosophy is based on the “get one, give one” principle: when you purchase certain items from our menu, the money will help us provide a meal to hungry families in our community. 100% of the truck’s overhead costs have been provided by generous donations that allow us to take every dollar beyond supplies and staff costs and put it toward food and hot meals for the communities in and around Buffalo, N.Y.

For three years, the Amherst Central School District has operated the “Tiger’s Den” food pantry which provides access to nutritional foods and household products for many families within the district. It has been a great success and welcome addition to our community, serving an average of 75 families per month.

Now, during this time of national crisis, with many people out of work and all of our school age children at home indefinitely – the need for this service is increasing daily. The Alumni Foundation has offered to help “ramp up” the supply chain for the Tiger’s Den – providing gift cards and needed products for the pantry shelves.

You can help during this critical time and here’s how:

Ms. Schriver was born June 7, 1941, in Buffalo, the daughter of the late James George and Mary Louise (nee Anderson) Schriver. Growing up in Amherst, Ms. Schriver was a 1959 graduate of Amherst High School and furthered her education at Bethany College and the University of Minnesota.

Ms. Schriver’s career as a special education teacher for 29 years at Sweet Home High School in Amherst resulted in numerous recognitions, including Teacher of the Year. She impacted the lives of many students who might never have graduated without her help as a teacher. She guided students on many tours of Europe including a tour in Russia. Ms. Schriver was an exchange teacher and taught in Manchester, England, for a year, where she developed a great love for the English people, their landscapes and their royal family. Ms. Schriver had an extensive collection of books and memorabilia of the royal family.

When she retired, she moved to Hiram, Ohio, to be near her daughter and family. A member of Hiram Community Church, Ms. Schriver enjoyed travel, photography, reading, knitting and a good political discussion. Ms. Schriver was known for her kind heart and caring nature. She taught by example. Her courage and tenacity over the 20 years she battled her disease taught her family that life was bigger and better than any disease that would try interfering.

Ms. Schriver is survived by her daughter, Abra Leigh Schweickert; seven grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Albert Schriver.

A memorial service celebrating her extraordinary life will be held at the Hiram Christian Church July 5, 2020.
