Tiger’s Den Food Pantry | October Needs

The Tiger’s Den Food Pantry is open to anyone in need, in the zip code 14226, or by referral.  

The October pantry hours are: Thursdays (10/6 and 10/20) from 3:00 pm—6:30 pm and Saturdays (10/8 and 10/22) from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm. 

Donations for October: canned beans (all kinds), canned chicken, canned tuna, rice (white, brown, jasmine, basmati) and coffee & tea. Donations can be dropped off  Monday – Friday to the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (4007 Main St. – Office Entrance) during office hours: 9:30 – 1:30 daily. Any questions, please contact St. Paul’s Office: 835-0407.

Rob Adams Named Director of Health, Physical Education & Athletics

The Amherst Central School District Board of Education appointed Robert Adams as its new director of health, physical education and athletics, effective Oct. 24. Mr. Adams replaces Jeffrey Wheaton who has accepted an athletic director position at Monroe Upper and Lower High School in the Rochester City School District.

Since 2013, Adams has been the director for student life and campus student engagement for Alexander Central School District. In this role, he supervised and administered the athletic department and extracurricular clubs, activities and events for the fitness, sports and swim programs. He managed the daily operations of athletic events; selected, supervised and trained coaches; directed club advisors; and supervised the district’s summer recreation program. He implemented a culture that encouraged student engagement in athletics and clubs, as well as developed and executed a long-term vision for athletics and student leadership.

Added to his duties at Alexander CSD, he served as interim middle and high school assistant principal, physical education department chair, PE and health education teacher for grades 7-12 and varsity tennis and varsity soccer coach.

His previous work experience included director of physical education and athletics positions at Magen David Academy in Panama City in Panama and at Sugar Creek Charter School in Charlotte, N.C. During the three years he was in Panama, he created, implemented and oversaw the PE and health curriculum for prekindergarten to grade 12. He founded the Under Armor Private School Athletics League (PSAL) which organized all private schools in the Panama area for competition. He also introduced a “Nuts for PE” afterschool program to provide enrichment for students outside of the academic school day. He also taught prekindergarten to grade 12 physical education. While in Charlotte, he created and implemented a PE and Health curriculum, introduced a six-sport athletics program and taught middle school PE and math.

He received a master’s degree in educational leadership/supervision with a concentration in athletics administration, a master’s and bachelor’s degree in education, all from Canisius College. He earned an associate degree from Finger Lakes Community College.

He holds professional certifications in School District Leadership, initial School Building Leadership, Physical Education (K-12), Health Education (K-12), lifeguard, first aid, and CPR/AED.

He received the Alexander Central Compass Teacher of the Year award during the 2017-18 school year. He is a member of SHAPE America and NYS Association for Health PE Recreation and Dance, National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association, NYS Athletic Administrators Association.

Former AD, Nancy Riccio, has returned on a temporary basis until Adams comes on board full-time at the end of October.

The Amherst Central Alumni Foundation kicks off 2022-2023 school year

The Amherst Central Alumni Foundation, Inc. (ACAF) kicked the 2022-2023 school year with a meeting at the Family Tree Restaurant on September 1, 2022. At the meeting, the ACAF’s new President, Treasurer, and Secretary officially assumed their new roles with the foundation’s board of directors.

Incoming President Jessica Muenter had this to say about here new role, “I’m honored to take over the position of President of the Alumni Foundation and hope to continue the good work the Foundation has done in the community to not only keep alumni informed of happenings, but also to provide the excellent Amherst education we have all received.”

Also at the meeting, the ACAF said good-bye to board members John Dengler ’82, Sue Fretz ’73 (Immediate Past Treasurer), Marilyn Rohl ’70 (Immediate Past President), Donna Roll ’71, and Lindsay Wolfe ’77. The Foundation thanks them for their numerous years of service and commitment to the foundation’s mission.

The ACAF is looking forward to an exciting year supporting the Amherst Central School District.

Richard (Dick) Granger `62 – 08/22/2022

Richard (Dick) Olds Granger Sr was born in Deaconess Hospital in Buffalo, New York, on March 6, 1944 to Darrell and Leslie Granger. He graduated from Amherst High School in 1962 where he was a member of the school s varsity football team and rifle squad. He later attended State University at Buffalo. Dick married his high school sweetheart, Leigh Marie Truby on July 10, 1965. He made a career in the grocery business from 1960-1989 leaving as a Perishable Supervisor from Food Lion Inc. Dick later started and operated his own business, Lake Norman Sign Center, until his full retirement in 2006. He is survived by his wife Leigh of 57 years, son Richard and wife Pam, daughter Deborah Crane and husband Jeff, Sister Marcia Henze; six grandchildren: Kayley, Tyson, Erin, Miranda, Emily and Dillon, as well as two great grandchildren Hadleigh and Brantlee.

Services will be held on Thursday August 25, 2022 at Siler Presbyterian Church located at 6301 Weddington Road, Wesley Chapel, NC 28104. The family will receive friends beginning at 2 p.m. with the service to follow at 3:00.

Arthur Richard (Dick) Franz `49 – 03/19/2022

Arthur Richard (Dick) Franz, Age 91 went to be with the Lord peacefully at his home on March 19, 2022. He was Born on December 1, 1930 in Buffalo, NY to Ethel Beanard and A. Richard Franz Sr.

Along with his Parents, He is preceded in death by his sister, Jane (Mac) Mackenzie, In laws, Helen (Hoak) Russell W. Porter, Sister-in-Law, Maryanne Porter, Daughter, Sharon Leslie Marie Franz, Son, William Richard (Susan) Franz, Grandson’s Adam Michael Franz and Jaxon Martin McGee.

He leaves behind his High School Sweetheart, Loving, Adoring and Devoted wife of 70 years, Joanne Leatrice Porter Franz. Three blessed children, Gretchen (Jeffrey) Harmon, Russell (AnnMarie) Franz and Katrina (Steven) Spring. 11 Grandchildren, Amy (John) McGee, William (Emily) Franz Jr., Jessica Franz, Carrie (Jeffrey) Stann, Pamela (Jeromy) Fincher, Jordan Franz, Connor Franz, Randall (Kristen) Spring, Katelynn (Christopher) Smith and Kristina (Mark) George Jr. 34 Great Grand Children and 1 Great-Great Grand Daughter. Sister-in-law Linda (Raymond) Braun, many cousins, nieces and nephews and very dear lifelong friends.

Richard served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War and was a very proud Veteran.

Richard attended Amherst CSD, GCC, SUNY Brockport and Canton University to earn his degree and retired in 1995 from the Batavia City School District as the Schools Psychologist. A position he held with extreme devotion to the students he worked with every day.

Dick and Jo together were members of the Victims Assistance Program in Genesee County as they helped many families with their grief and loss of their loved ones. He also served on the Genesee County Conditional Release Program and served on the Town of Darien Tax Review Board.

Dick and Jo made their home in Darien for the past 65 years. Richard enjoyed life and brought so much joy to so many. His infectious smile, humor, gentleness, compassion, and love was very deep and most sincere. He always found his way into people’s hearts.

The family wishes to express a special thanks for the care and love shown by the staff at Johnny’s Angels for the past few years. Dr. Mary Obear and her staff for the kindness and care to assistance in his journey. Jeromy Fincher, (Grandson in law) for his devotion, dedication, and care for Dad.

Private service will be held for immediate family only.   

Arrangements were made by C. B. Beach & Son Mortuary, Inc., Corfu, New York.
