Amherst Bee

(by KEATON T. DEPRIEST Associate Editor) The Amherst Central Board of Education was recently seeking a way for people to make charitable contributions to benefit the district.

With the direction of the School Board and through the assistance of the Amherst Central Alumni Foundation, the Amherst Alternative Funding Sources Committee was created.

The committee, which comprises residents, business leaders, district staff members, parents of students, and alumni, makes cases to support the specific needs of the district.

Sarah Carney, a member of the committee and coordinator of the Amherst Appeal — a campaign that seeks funding and in-kind donations from the community — said the goal is to have a significant financial impact on the district, which ultimately will positively affect the students.

Class of 1983’s Mary Ellen Haefner has a goal to make Main Street in Williamsville more walkable and appealing

3p1.preview(by ANNA WALTERS Reporter) Mary Ellen Haefner has a goal to make Main Street in Williamsville more walkable and appealing, and is working to take the next step forward.

At a recent Village Board work session, Haefner presented her vision to officials. Her objective is to make the history of Williamsville more apparent on Main Street through contemporary modes of signage.

“She came up with the idea on her own and wanted to apply this to the village she loves; it’s just tremendous,” Williamsville Mayor Brian Kulpa said. “It’s something we see time and time again from business members to residents in the community who want to get involved.”

Through One Region Forward and participating in Champions for Change, Haefner has developed her engagement.

According to One Region Forward’s website, it is a collaborative effort promoting more sustainable forms of development, in both Erie and Niagara counties, involving housing, transportation, energy and land use.

“There’s something you want to solve or there’s something you want to improve,” said Haefner, a Williamsville resident. “But most of it goes to the sustainability, the walkability, the livability of communities, where people like where they live, they feel safe, they feel like they can get to the places they really want to go to,” she said.

Kulpa says it would be a great project to work with.

“We’re just kind of getting to know it; it sounds promising,” he said. “We really want to not just make [Main Street] pedestrian-accessible; we want to make it so people have an enjoyable walking experience.”

Kulpa says the signage can be something as simple as a printed sign or as dynamic as a glass-encased note.

A Message from Alumni Foundation President

Hello to all Amherst Alumni!

I am Lynn Phillips Ramsey, a graduate of the class of 1979 and the newest President of your Amherst Central Alumni 11c6ce2Foundation! I follow a long line of dedicated past presidents and we have one thing in common- a love for the Amherst Schools. We also share a passion to keep our alumni connected and continue the excellence in teaching, programming, materials and experiences to preserve our alma mater. All of our Foundation Board members volunteer their time to represent YOU! Please contact me if you are interested in becoming involved!

I have been a board member of the foundation for 4 years, serving as co chair of the grants committee, a member of the committee and participant in our golf tournament and most recently assisted our past president, Mark Ahrens. I also started our Amherst Central Alumni Chorale last season. It’s a joy to be in our school buildings partner with faculty and administration and see all the exciting opportunities for our students. My children, now 22 and 25 are graduates of Amherst.

The Amherst Alumni Foundation exists because of the foresight of Don Munson and Art Pankow. They wanted to keep Alumni connected, preserve memories, facilitate reunions and assist the schools in continuing the great education offered at Amherst. Our foundation attempts to keep records of our over 22,000 alumni so we can share important information- Please share email and home addresses for you, family members and classmates to assist us in keeping our records as current as possible! At my 35th reunion this summer, several people had to be alerted to our function because they has not updated their contact information! Don’t let this happen to you!

We have an exciting year planned. It is our school’s 85th birthday! We will be celebrating July 23rd-25th.

Send in class notes at any time! Donations gratefully accepted as well!

Hope to meet you all at one of our Alumni Functions.

Lynn Phillips Ramsey 1979, President
Amherst Central Alumni Foundation, Inc.
