2p1.preview(by KEATON T. DEPRIEST Associate Editor) The Amherst Central Alumni Chorale will perform its second annual concert, “A Salute to Show Tunes,” at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 11, in the auditorium at Amherst High School, 4301 Main St., Amherst.

The concert will feature songs from the school’s music library, including selections from “Phantom of the Opera,” “Shrek,” “Rent,” “Chicago,” “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.”

Lynn Phillips Ramsey, the chorale’s organizer, said the music pieces chosen for the concert encompass all generations of the high school.

As part of the Amherst Central Alumni Foundation’s grant program, we help fund various student activities throughout the school district. One of the programs funded this year was the Amherst High School Quiz Bowl Team. Anne Ward, Social Studies Teacher and Quiz Bowl Advisor, sent along an exciting email and some pictures from the team’s recent trip to Washington, DC.

The email:

This past weekend, 10 Amherst students competed in the National History Bee and Bowl National Tournament in Washington, DC. Junior Ben Lackner won 5th place nationally for his individual performance in the Sports and Entertainment portion of the National History Bee, and one team took first place in a varsity consolation final, with the other team coming in second in another consolation final. In addition to competing, the students took a private tour of the US Capitol through Senator Schumer’s office and visited landmarks like the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian.

Teachers Matt Murray and Anne Ward took students Sofia Carbonara, Jane Fan, Ben Lackner, Taylor Johnson, Adam Merkle, Jack Nelson, Skylar Polek, Alex Schick, Lauren Turecki, and Jon White to the 2015 NHBB National Tournament.

This is wonderful news and congratulations Quiz Bowl Team!

Through the generous support of Amherst Alumni, you helped make this happen.

Amherst All Class Choral Reading Event

needed

Hello Amherst Central High School Alumni!

By now you should have received a mailing from the Alumni Office outlining the plans for the 85th All-Class Reunion, to be held this July 23rd thru July 25th. One of the events is an all-class choral reading event – scheduled for July 24th – noon to 3pm – continuing in the tradition of events held in 2000, 2005 and 2010.

You are receiving this e-mail because you have either attended or expressed interest in attending one or more of the prior events. As has been the case in 2000, 2005 and 2010, Walter Reitz (a very young 93 years old) will be participating as one of our directors. The event also includes a catered lunch. The entry fee is $35, which covers the lunch, custodial staff, building rental, music rental, piano tuning, etc. Any left over funds will be donated to the Alumni Association to fund things like scholarships.

Please respond via e-mail (jdr11@comcast.net) to let me know if you are interested. You will then receive a link to the Alumni Association sign-up site, where they will handle all registrations. Please respond in this manner so that we can get a decent count for music and lunches. There will be some selections for meals – and you will be contacted for your choices after you register.

We sincerely hope you will be able to join us for what promises to be another memorable event, where we sing for our own enjoyment, not as a performance for an audience. Not to worry if your site reading skills are not what they used to be. We have reached “critical mass” on site readers every time, leading everyone to believe that they are pretty hot stuff.

We will also be looking for volunteer directors, accompanists and music assembly and sorting volunteers (since the music is all borrowed from local music libraries) The assembly process will be at the school on Thursday the 23rd – and the resorting after the event on Friday the 24th.

We look forward to hearing from you and singing with you once again. If you have a significant other or friend who might like to join us, that is perfectly fine. We have had guests in the past from at least local churches and the Amherst Male Glee Club. Now that there is a local Alumni Chorus, led by Rosemary Dayton, we will undoubtedly have participation from them as well.

Your Hosts,

John Roberts (’64), Marilyn Obermeyer (’64), Lynn Phillips Ramsey (‘79)
