AMHERST CENTRAL ALUMNI FOUNDATION, INC. AND AMHERST APPEAL ANNOUNCE ALMOST $10,000 IN GRANTS

The Amherst Central Alumni Foundation Grant Committee awarded $4,400 for requests submitted by faculty and staff for the March 1 deadline. Grants were awarded in all four schools for exercise equipment, an attendance intervention program, after school enrichment programs and workshops, a distance learning lab and a Griffis Park sponsored plasma cutting program. The grants are fully funded by generous alumni donations, an annual golf outing and other fund raisers. Grants are awarded for programs that are not funded by the school budget and are selected based on the most students that will be positively affected. The Grant Committee awarded $10,000 in grants for the 2015-16 school year and over $75,000 in the last 12 years.

Additional grants were awarded through the school district’s Appeal Fund. Requests typically over $1,000 and that are unable to be funded through the Alumni Foundation are considered. The Appeal Committee recently awarded $5,490 for upgrades in sports equipment, leveled chapter books as well as two music grants which were awarded through the Dedicated Seats fund. The Dedicated Seats Fund was established to specifically help fund the arts in the school district. Alumni and parents can purchase a plaque to be placed on one of the seats in the high school auditorium. The Appeal Fund is supported through generous donations from local Amherst businesses, alumni, parents, and the Show Us Your Stripes fundraising event.

Alumni Foundation Releases Plans for 2016 Educator Emeritus and Distinguished Alumni Awards

Each year the Amherst Central Alumni Foundation takes pride in honoring its alumni and educators for their exceptional accomplishments. The Foundation has been presenting the Distinguished Educator Emeritus Award since 2004. This year, for the first time in 2016, it will also be honoring special alumni for their outstanding achievements that will be part of our new Alumni Wall of Fame.

The Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes individuals who are highly regarded in at least one of the following areas: Business, Education, Government or Military Service, Arts, Athletics, Public Service, Healthcare, or Community Service. These individuals are held in the highest regard and serve as positive role models in their community. A special selections committee made up of ACAF, Inc. Board of Directors and retired faculty will select this year’s honorees.

The Educator Emeritus Award recognizes retired faculty and administrators for their extraordinary contributions to their students while in service at Amherst Central High School, Amherst Central Middle School, Smallwood Drive Elementary, Windermere Boulevard Elementary, Harlem Road Elementary and Eggert Road Elementary schools. Alumni, faculty, and friends of Amherst are encouraged to submit nominations by May 15, 2016 to be considered for the 2016 award. A brief statement explaining the nominees attributes and why you feel they are deserving of this award is appreciated. The Passing of Dr. Paul Wietig

It is with a heavy heart that I share with you the news of Dr. Paul Wietig’s passing last night. As many of you are aware, he served as a teacher, administrator and mentor to many in this community. His last post in the district was as Deputy Superintendent, prior to his retirement in 2007.

For those of you who never met him, it is hard to express how much Paul meant to this district. He was proud to be part of this family; in fact, he was one of the driving forces behind our family atmosphere. His dedication to the children was always at the forefront of his intentions. In fact, when grappling with a tough decision he often paused to ask, “What is best for the students?”

Paul was truly selfless – he took pride in putting the needs of others first. His network was expansive and his name became synonymous with the Amherst Central School District. He made the ultimate investment in our district by living in the community, sending his children to our schools and supporting our mission. If you had the pleasure of teaching his children, you know he was an active parent that offered his full support for you as a teacher.

It may seem like an understatement, but this school district meant as much to Dr. Wietig as he did to the district. For more reflection please view the article below from the Amherst Bee printed shortly after Dr. Wietig’s retirement.
