The Amherst Central Alumni Foundation, Inc. Grant Committee awarded $10,000 for requests submitted by faculty and staff for the November 1, 2021 application deadline. Grants were awarded in all four schools for technology, sports, music, special education and other academics. The grants are fully funded by generous alumni donations, an annual golf outing and other fund raisers. Grants are awarded for programs that are not funded by the school district budget and are selected based on the most students that will be positively affected. The Amherst Central Alumni Foundation, Inc. has awarded over $150,000 in grants over the last 18 years. Through the combined efforts of the Amherst MS/HS PTSA, Amherst Tigers Booster Club and the Amherst Central Alumni Foundation, each senior high school student will receive a law sign to display at home. With the Covid-19 crisis forcing the closure of schools in the district since mid-March, this a great way to show some Tiger Pride towards the Class of 2020.

First off, we’ve already received four TI-84 calculators! Thank you.
You can drop off at the Alumni Office We are open on Monday and Friday from 9:00am-1:30pm and Wednesday from 9:00am-1:00pm and 5:30pm-8:30pm. We are located in Room 124 in the high school. Outside of alumni office hours there is calculator donation box in the main office. The school is open until 3:30pm daily.
After a number inquiries from alumni about sending cash for calculators, we’ve opened up the drive to financial donations.

There’s also been some confusion about the TI-84 name. They are actually called TI-84 Plus.

The Amherst Mathematics Department is trying to find gently used or new TI-84 calculators that can be reused for our students as part of a calculator loan program.
Technology is a growing resource in education and currently in mathematics graphing calculators are a requirement for all state math exams. In an effort to prepare our students for this demand, we suggest that all students try to purchase their own TI-84 calculator. However, for some families this technology purchase is not within the family’s economic means. Due to this, the Amherst Math Department started a Calculator Loan Program over 15 years ago. This program allows students and families that are economically challenged an opportunity to borrow a graphing calculator for the entire school year. The program started with loaning out around 50 calculators and we now have over 100 calculators in circulation with a waiting list of more students that are in need.
Over the years the math department has applied for grants and tried to continue to increase the inventory of calculators. However, due to calculators breaking down and the increased demand, we are in need of even more. We are hoping that our Alumni will be able to help us add to our program by donating a TI-84 Calculators back to the school. One calculator can help make a difference for one student every year in the future!
There will be a calculator donation box in the main office and alumni office at the High School. You can also mail your calculators to the school. All help will be graciously appreciated.

Lois (Murray) Carson, age 87, died on 10/03/19 at home after a long battle with COPD. She is predeceased by her sister Madelin Murray, and her husband Louis Carson. Lois is survived by her children: Russell (Mary) Carson, Richard (Kelley) Carson, Barbara Carson, Carol Mollach, and William (Stephanie) Carson. She is also survived by her sister Helen Graf, 5 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren.
Lois graduated from the Eastman School of Music and played the violin with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra for 50 years. She was active in the union and fought for better pay and improved working conditions for her fellow musicians for many years. Lois also enjoyed organizing reunions and get-togethers for her Amherst Central High School and Eastman School of Music classes.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to either the music program through the Amherst Central Alumni Foundation at 4301 Main St., Amherst, NY 14226, or to the Dean’s fund for Violin at the Eastman School of Music Office of Gift and Donation Services, 300 East River Rd., Box 270032, Rochester, NY 14627.
A celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday, 10/08/19 at 3:00 pm at La Galleria Events, 3923 Southwestern Blvd., Orchard Park, NY.
