Support Thomas Bala, aka “Sir Thomas The Mighty!”

Thomas Bala, aka “Sir Thomas The Mighty,” (he received this nickname on the day he was born) is a 3 year old boy who was diagnosed in May 2016 with Cortical Dysplasia (a congenital brain birth defect), which causes Focal Epilepsy. He was having up to 25 seizures a day. Brain surgery was recommended but has been put on hold while his seizures are currently controlled, and he battles Very Severe Neutropenia (immuno-compromised) and selective antibody deficiency (weak responder to vaccines). Thomas gets sick often. Every fever means a trip to the Emergency room and possible admission to the hospital, and missed work for his mom and dad. For the past year, Thomas has been continuously seeing multiple specialists (Neurology, Neurosurgery, Hematology, Immunology, and Genetics) in three cities, Buffalo, NY, Rochester, NY, and Boston, MA, where he continues to undergo multiple tests, procedures, and consultations.

He is the son Amherst grads Rebecca Aquilina Bala ’98 and Matt Bala ’04.

Please consider a shirt purchase or donation to his online fundraiser.

Grants in Action: Literacy Partners Book Program for Pre-K

Posted by amherstalumnioffice on 2017-06-19
Posted in: News. Tagged: Grants. Leave a comment

As part of the Amherst Central Alumni Foundation’s grant program, we help fund various student activities throughout the school district. The foundation will also receive some material we like to share with alumni about the grants we fund. One of the programs funded this year was Literacy Partners Book Program for Pre-K students.

We received this recap and thank you from the Amherst Central School District’s UPK Coordinator, Karen Redding.

Dear Amherst Central Alumni Foundation,

I would like to thank you on behalf of our entire District Pre-K Program for your generous Grant for our Literacy Partners Book Program.

Each year, we conclude our school year with a Parent-Child Celebration of Literacy in the classroom. To prepare for this, the classrooms spend a couple of weeks working with books by Eric Carle as they complete an Author Study in conjunction with our Insects Science Unit. The culminating Parent-Child Day consists of many hands-on curriculum activities including math, science and language based centers. The children also bring one Eric Carle book to life by reenacting it for their parents. The celebration concludes with the children each receiving a surprise Eric Carle Book to take home and enjoy reading over the summer.

The purpose of the day is to model and share our curriculum with parents and demonstrate how to foster a love of books and reading with our families.

I am attaching some pictures so you can enjoy some snapshots of the day. Thank you again for continuing to support our program and make a positive difference for our 141 families!

Thank You,

Karen Redding
