Robert Allen Kositsky (Bob) – age 85 – passed away peacefully on July 26, 2024.

Bob was a loving, hard-working, and quick-witted man. He was known for his seriousness, yet his dry sense of humor never failed to produce laughs. He enjoyed traveling, lazy weekend mornings, playing pranks on his family and co-workers, and relaxing with his fur babies, Buddy and Zooey.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on August 22nd,1939, he was the son of Stanley Kositsky and Sylvia Karsh. In 1953, his family moved to Buffalo, New York where he graduated from Amhurst High School in 1957, and then graduated from the University of Buffalo in 1961. He remained very proud to be a part of the Kappa Nu fraternity brotherhood. He joined the US Army Reserves in 1962 and remained enlisted for 6 years. He married his love Francine on November 26th, 1983 in Wilmington, Delaware. Bob and Fran moved to South Florida in 1984 where they built their family home in 1986, located in the Welleby community of Sunrise, Florida. They started fostering children shortly after. Bob and Fran adopted their three children, Kevin, Danielle, and Lauren in 1991. Bob worked primarily in the hospitality and customer care industries until his retirement in 2014.

Bob will be remembered for his outlandish jokes that often included food items, his love for his fraternity brothers, and his unwillingness to be without his love, Franny.

In addition to his parents, Stanley and Sylvia, Bob was preceeded in death by his wife of 40 years Francine who unexpectedly passed only 20 days prior to his passing, his brother Mark, cousin David, in-laws Frank and Enid Stevens, sister-in-law Julie Stevens and nieces- Erica and Amy Stevens. Bob is survived by his children – Danielle Troutman (Kevin), Lauren Alvarez (Isaac), and Kevin Kositsky, Grandchildren – Miranda, Sophia, Olivia, Konnor and Asher. He had many cherished cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held on August 27th, 2024, at the Delray Beach Golf Club. Please reach out to Danielle Troutman or Lauren Alvarez for more details.

Amherst’s 76th OPERETTA: CATS – Patron Drive

Dear Amherst Alumni:

We are in the throes of the Amherst Operetta’s Annual Patron Drive, which raises funds for the Operetta by selling ad space in the program.  The Operetta is able to exist each year because of, essentially, only two revenue streams that make the show possible: Patrons and Ticket Sales.

Our Development Team is led by Mrs. Jessica McLaughlin, assisted by Ms. Danielle Rodgers.

Our patron goal is $20,000.  Last year we surpassed this goal, having raised approximately $20,750 in ad sales.  The remainder of the budget is paid for by ticket sales. I anticipate the CATS budget to be approximately $35,000 – $40,000.  To give you an idea of a few past shows:

  • Phantom (the Operetta’s only other Lloyd Webber Musical) was still the highest to date at approx $57,000 in production costs.
  • Last year’s Les Miserables cost approximately $56,200.
  • TITANIC 2020 cost approximately $44,000
  • Seussical 2023 was approximately $41,000

The link below will take you to the Operetta’s Annual Patron Spreadsheet, where you can see all of the current patron subscribers and the last 7 or 8 years (see YEAR tabs at the bottom of the page).  From this document, the staff keeps track of every ad sale, large or small, and works to develop the program that is distributed when the audience arrives for the performances.

Operetta Annual Patron Spreadsheet

Any and ALL patrons help to keep the production going strong, purchase materials for the set, costumes, company events, and even compensate the staff, which is NOT covered by the ACSD.  As I always articulate, the Amherst Operetta is nearly self-sufficient, run like a professional theatre company that produces one major production annually.  These funds also support the Music Department Scholarships at the end of the year.

Thank you for your help keeping this great Amherst tradition alive and well!  Your help is needed!  Please, feel free to reach out to a local business, your workplace, etc., and solicit a patron in support of the Operetta!  No patron is too small or too large, and your help is the most important of all!

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to: Justin Pomietlarz, Producer/Music Director: Jpomietlarz@amherstschools.org or Jessica McLaughlin, Patron and Development Manager: blettj@gmail.com

Thank you so very much for supporting our Amherst students!  The Amherst Operetta is the OLDEST High School Music Theatre program in Western New York 1950 – 2025 – an astounding

76 annual productions!

With sincere respect and appreciation, Justin T. Pomietlarz

Note from Mrs. McLaughlin:

Dear Amherst Family and Friends,

This year marks the 76th consecutive year of Amherst Central High School’s long tradition of exceptional musical theatre productions.  We are sure that this year’s selection of CATS will carry on this fine tradition!

These shows exist in large part because individuals in our community recognize the educational benefits and entertainment value of the musical theatre experience and contribute financially to help cover the costs of the production. There are many costs associated with putting on a Broadway quality show such as fees for a professional stage director and choreographer, royalty fees, printing programs, costumes, makeup, lighting and set design.

We have met with Mr. Pomietlarz, producer and vocal director, and set a fundraising goal of $20,000.   In order to meet this goal we need your help!  We only have a few weeks to raise funds for this production.

In this email, you will find the Patron Drive forms to share with your favorite businesses and family/friends.  We are also sharing a list of the Patrons that have donated in the past.  If you see an unclaimed patron that you would like to contact, please feel free to do so! We also hope to grow our patron list so that more businesses can help us reach our goal! Please contact either of us if you have any questions or to share your ideas on how we can make this year’s Patron Drive a huge success.

Sincerely,

Danielle Rodgers (dwrpianist@gmail.com)

and Jess McLaughlin (blettj@gmail.com)

Wendy K. Gentile
October 10, 1971 – December 29, 2024
Obituary of Wendy K. Gentile

IN THE CARE OF
Swan Funeral Home

In the words of her mother, “She’s kicked the bucket.” Wendy Kathleen (Friel) Gentile has left this earth and moved to a different location. No forwarding address given.

She was born and raised in Buffalo, NY on October 10th, 1971 and graduated from Amherst Central High School. Wendy passed away peacefully on December 29th, 2024 in the care of loving nurses at Chestelm Rehab in East Haddam, CT at the young age of 53. She lost her battle with pancreatic cancer after fighting very hard since January of 2022. Wendy was the oldest child of four children to Katie (O’Shea) and Jim Friel. Her younger brothers Jim, Chris and Jacob all stayed local to Buffalo, NY.

She started her college career at Canisius College in Buffalo, NY where she met her husband, Michael Gentile. She then graduated from C.W. Post with a degree in elementary education. Wendy and her husband settled in East Haddam, CT where they raised their only daughter Rachel.

Wendy wore many hats and had various occupations over her years. However, the job she loved most was working as a welder for Electric Boat for the past seven years. She was known as “Wendy the Welder” by her fellow colleagues and friends.

Wendy loved Tiki Bob, a bright blue manual Jeep that was recently purchased by the family so they had a “fun” vehicle. Wendy also loved to plan trips and vacations for the family. Their most recent being a trip to Disney World with her brother Chris and his family. This was followed by a road trip to Tennessee to visit Dollywood and Flavortown because everyone knows that Tennessee is on the way back to Connecticut from Florida.

Wendy leaves behind a loving husband, Michael and daughter Rachel, nephews Patrick and Liam and nieces, Amanda, Leah, Molly, Riley, Corinne and Elise. Being the only girl, she had four sister-in-laws, Julianne, Melissa, Lexi and Shannon that provided these great young adults. Her three brothers and brother-in-law, Matthew, round out the last of her family.

Her Mother, Katie (O’Shea) Friel, predeceased her in May of 2023 and her Mother-in-law, Donna (Kirchhof) Gentile, in September of 2024.

Her services will be held on Sunday January 5th from 12 pm to 3 pm at Swan Funeral Home in Old Saybrook, CT. Per Wendy’s request, this event is a celebration of her life and guests are NOT allowed to wear black.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Wendy’s honor to After the Storm Inc. or Clarkson University Relay for Life.
