The Amherst Central Alumni Foundation has partnered up with the high school mathematics department with a donation drive to acquire TI-84 calculators for students. It’s a great way for Tiger Alumni to give to the Tigers of today. 🐯
Here is information on the drive from the department.
The Amherst Mathematics Department is trying to find gently used or new TI-84 calculators that can be reused for our students as part of a calculator loan program.
Technology is a growing resource in education and currently in mathematics graphing calculators are a requirement for all state math exams. In an effort to prepare our students for this demand, we suggest that all students try to purchase their own TI-84 calculator. However, for some families this technology purchase is not within the family’s economic means. Due to this, the Amherst Math Department started a Calculator Loan Program over 15 years ago. This program allows students and families that are economically challenged an opportunity to borrow a graphing calculator for the entire school year. The program started with loaning out around 50 calculators and we now have over 100 calculators in circulation with a waiting list of more students that are in need.
Over the years the math department has applied for grants and tried to continue to increase the inventory of calculators. However, due to calculators breaking down and the increased demand, we are in need of even more. We are hoping that our Alumni will be able to help us add to our program by donating a TI-84 Calculators back to the school. One calculator can help make a difference for one student every year in the future!
There will be a calculator donation box in the main office and alumni office at the High School. You can also mail your calculators to the school. All help will be graciously appreciated.
Thank you,
Jenny Koeppel-Keenan and the Entire Mathematics Department

Amherst Academies students had an opportunity to visit the Aesthetic Associates Center on November 8th to explore careers in dental medicine and cosmetic surgery. Amherst alumni Dr.Todd Shatkin and Dr. Sam Shatkin along with their staff, hosted the 20 students. The doctors each gave a talk about their careers, the remarkable history about their practice, and showed them examples of their work through pictures.
During a tour of the amazing facility, the students got to see the technology and equipment used and met the staff where they also learned about the many different careers in dental care.
Two hygienists followed up with a lesson and a quiz. Dr. Todd gave away three electric toothbrushes to the students with the best quiz results. Everyone received a complimentary bag containing a toothbrush, paste, floss, lip balm, and more.
After lunch the students headed back to school having had a great experience, learned new things, and truly inspired.
A great big thank you to Dr. Todd and Dr. Sam Shatkin for a phenomenal experience!

Back in October, the Alumni Office was contacted by Christina Evans, Amherst Central High School Business Teacher. She asked us to put out a call to Amherst Alumni to see if anyone would be interested in participating in mock interviews with her students. Christina Evans sent us some photos and a write-up on the interviews.
