Betty Louise Schriver, 78, of Hiram, Ohio, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2019. Ms. Schriver passed peacefully, surrounded by her entire family.
Ms. Schriver was born June 7, 1941, in Buffalo, the daughter of the late James George and Mary Louise (nee Anderson) Schriver. Growing up in Amherst, Ms. Schriver was a 1959 graduate of Amherst High School and furthered her education at Bethany College and the University of Minnesota.
Ms. Schriver’s career as a special education teacher for 29 years at Sweet Home High School in Amherst resulted in numerous recognitions, including Teacher of the Year. She impacted the lives of many students who might never have graduated without her help as a teacher. She guided students on many tours of Europe including a tour in Russia. Ms. Schriver was an exchange teacher and taught in Manchester, England, for a year, where she developed a great love for the English people, their landscapes and their royal family. Ms. Schriver had an extensive collection of books and memorabilia of the royal family.
When she retired, she moved to Hiram, Ohio, to be near her daughter and family. A member of Hiram Community Church, Ms. Schriver enjoyed travel, photography, reading, knitting and a good political discussion. Ms. Schriver was known for her kind heart and caring nature. She taught by example. Her courage and tenacity over the 20 years she battled her disease taught her family that life was bigger and better than any disease that would try interfering.
Ms. Schriver is survived by her daughter, Abra Leigh Schweickert; seven grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Albert Schriver.
A memorial service celebrating her extraordinary life will be held at the Hiram Christian Church July 5, 2020.
