As part of the Amherst Central Alumni Foundation’s grant program, we help fund various student activities throughout the school district. The foundation will also receive some material we like to share with alumni about the grants we fund. One of the programs funded this year was Amherst High School Juniors visiting Buffalo’s historic Darwin Martin House.
We received this recap of the trip.
On Friday 18 December 2015 some eighty members of the Junior class were able to experience a piece of local history by visiting the Darwin Martin House. The trip was utilized by United States History teachers Greg Kisker, Mark Jones, and Anne Ward to highlight both the incredible architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright and also to show the impact of American Industrialization on Western New York. Students taking part in the trip were amazed by the house itself, but also were captivated by the story behind Darwin Martin, the rise of the city of Buffalo, and powerful local enterprises like the Larkin Company. For many students, it was their first visit to this local gem, and many more had no idea the national influence the city of Buffalo once held. The trip was spearheaded by Amherst Assistant Principal Nancy Ables, who is a docent at the complex. The trip would not have been possible without monetary grants covering all costs associated with the trip. Many thanks to the Amherst Alumni Foundation, First Student Transportation and the Darwin Martin House.
