By ANNA WALTERS Reporter, Amherst Bee – In 1813, Sarah Lovejoy chose to defend her home, sending her son into the woods, as the burning of Buffalo filled the city with smoke.
Although Lovejoy’s home was ransacked and burned to the ground, Lovejoy Street now stands on the east side of Buffalo in her memory.
“We have such a strong history that I think a lot of people don’t know. You can drive down these streets every day and not think about it,” said Angela Keppel, author of the blog “Discovering Buffalo, One Street at a Time.”
According to the blog, Lovejoy was the only woman killed in the defense of Buffalo when it was burned by the British during the War of 1812.

The Amherst Central Alumni Foundation is organizing the 85th Anniversary Celebration from July 23 through 25.
There will be something for everyone at this all-year reunion. More information will be released in the coming weeks.
If you are planning your class reunion in 2015, make it part of the larger celebration of the high school’s anniversary.
The foundation is also looking for additional people to help organize the event. There will be a meeting at Amherst High School on Tuesday, January 20th at 7:00pm in the Alumni Office. If you want to help and come to the meeting, please contact the alumni office at 716.362.8259 or email@example.com so we can get a head count. If you can’t make the meeting and still want to help, contact Mark Ahrens at firstname.lastname@example.org.
This is going to be a great event!
